Count More Than Money

“I always count my blessings more than I count my money. I don’t work for money, never did.” — Dolly Parton
We measure a lot of things.
Revenue....Followers...Clients...Weight.
Steps...Hours...Emails opened.
Apparently, modern life has decided that if something exists, we should probably put it on a dashboard.
And measurement #affiliate can be useful.
Especially in business.
But there's a danger when we start measuring our life using only numbers.
Because some of the richest parts of life stubbornly refuse to fit into a spreadsheet.

1. Decide What “Rich” Means to You
Money matters.
Let's not pretend otherwise.
It provides security, opportunity, generosity, choices, and occasionally a really wonderful pair of shoes.
But money is a resource.
It isn't the entire definition of success.
Ask yourself:
If my life were genuinely rich, what would be in it?
Time?
Freedom?
Meaningful work?
Health?
Friendship?
Peace?
Laughter?
Afternoons when nobody needs anything from you?
Your answer matters because you can accidentally build financial success while becoming bankrupt in everything else.
2. Start Counting What Can't Be Deposited
We naturally notice what's missing.
The client we didn't get.
The goal we haven't reached.
The income number that isn't quite there.
But what if you deliberately counted something else?
The friend who called.
The client who said, “You really helped me.”
The morning sunlight through your window.
The dog who behaves as though your return from the mailbox is the greatest reunion in recorded history.
These aren't consolation prizes.
They're your life.
Ahhh.
Maybe gratitude isn't pretending you don't want more.
Maybe gratitude is refusing to overlook what you already have while you're creating what's next.
3. Build Success You Actually Want to Live In
This is particularly important for entrepreneurs.
It's surprisingly easy to create a business designed to give you freedom…
…and then discover you've created a boss who works you harder than your old boss ever did.
Except now the boss is you.
Awkward.
So occasionally ask:
Is the way I'm pursuing success creating the life I wanted success to give me?
That's a powerful question.
Perhaps you still want more revenue.
Wonderful.
More impact?
Absolutely.
A bigger business?
Go for it.
But don't postpone feeling successful until every number reaches some imaginary finish line.
Notice what's already working.
Count the people you love.
Count the mornings you wake up with choices.
Count the work that matters.
Count the moments when you laugh so hard you forget what you were worried about.
Keep counting your money.
Just remember to count your blessings too.
Because at the end of a very good life, the most important things you accumulated probably won't be things at all.
