“If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.” — Jim Rohn

Ordinary is comfortable.

It matches everything. It never offends anyone. It does not cause raised eyebrows at Thanksgiving.

But unusual?

Unusual wears orange shoes to a black-tie event. Unusual starts the business. Unusual changes careers at 52. Unusual says, “Actually… I want more.”

And yes, unusual can feel terrifying.

Here’s how to risk it gently.

1. Risk in Inches, Not Miles

You do not need to set your life on fire to avoid ordinary.

Risk can look like:

  • Sharing your opinion.

  • Raising your rates.

  • Applying before you feel ready.

  • Saying no without over-explaining.

Unusual often begins with one brave sentence.

2. Redefine “Embarrassment”

We avoid the unusual because we fear looking foolish.

But what if embarrassment is simply evidence of growth?

You can survive:

  • An awkward launch.

  • A failed attempt.

  • Someone not clapping.

What’s harder to survive? Years of “What if?”

3. Ask: “Will This Make a Good Story?”

When you’re 85, sipping tea dramatically…

Which choice will you smile about?

The safe beige one? Or the mildly chaotic, slightly brave one?

Ordinary rarely makes for legendary storytelling.

The unusual path is not reckless. It’s alive.

And often, the only difference between ordinary and extraordinary…

Is someone willing to look a little strange for a while.
