The Business You Build Starts With You

“I do believe that any successful business starts from the top and works its way down.” — Dolly Parton
If you're a solopreneur, I have slightly alarming news.
You are management.
You are also staff.
Marketing.
Sales.
Customer service.
Possibly IT.
And depending on the day, janitorial services.
Congratulations on your promotion.
But Dolly's quote raises an important point, particularly for small-business owners:
The culture of your business begins with you.
Not with your logo.
Not with your website.
Not with your latest marketing strategy.
You.

1. Your Business Learns How to Treat You From You
This one can sting a little.
If you're available at every hour…
If every request becomes urgent…
If boundaries disappear whenever someone might be disappointed…
If you routinely sacrifice your own needs to keep the business moving…
you've unintentionally created a culture.
Even if you're the only employee.
We often talk about teaching other people how to treat us.
But entrepreneurs also teach their businesses how to treat them.
What have you taught yours?
2. Lead Yourself the Way You Would Lead Someone You Value
Imagine hiring an incredibly talented women.
She's thoughtful.
Creative.
Committed.
Excellent with clients.
Would you tell her:
“Excellent work. Your reward is never taking a day off again.”
Probably not.
Yet entrepreneurs regularly create expectations for themselves that they'd never impose on another human being.
Try becoming a better leader to yourself.
Set reasonable expectations.
Create boundaries.
Allow recovery.
And perhaps stop holding performance reviews with yourself at 2:00 a.m.
Nothing productive has ever come from a 2:00 a.m. performance review.
3. Fix the Source, Not Just the Symptom
When something isn't working in business, our first instinct is often:
I need another strategy.
Sometimes you do.
But sometimes the strategy isn't the problem.
Perhaps you're avoiding decisions because you don't trust yourself.
Perhaps you're saying yes to clients who aren't a fit.
Perhaps your pricing no longer supports the business you're trying to create.
Perhaps you're exhausted because you've designed a business around everyone else's needs.
Here's the Ahhh:
Your business may not need you to work harder. It may need you to lead differently.
That changes the question from:
“What else should I be doing?”
to:
“Who do I need to become as the leader of this business?”
That's a very different conversation.
Successful businesses aren't simply collections of clever tactics.
They're shaped by decisions.
Standards.
Values.
Boundaries.
Vision.
And the person willing to protect those things.
Whether you're leading a team of 500 or a team consisting of yourself, a laptop, and a dog who has appointed herself Vice President of Snack Acquisition, leadership still starts at the top.
And in your business?
That means it starts with you.
